Three days, and the order matters more than the list. Lintong — the warriors, the burial mound, Huaqing Palace — is the only leg that leaves the city, so it gets a day to itself instead of being squeezed into a morning. The other two days sit on metro lines 2, 3, 4 and 8: one heavy on walking, one built around the museum. Each day below runs as an actual timetable, departure to lights-out — in summer the midday gap is deliberate, because the wall and the pits have no shade and afternoons touch 38–40 °C. Two bookings open days before you arrive and both are real-name, so make them before you fly, not after you land.
At a glance
- Day 1Yongningmen (South Gate) → city wall by bike → Shuyuanmen → Bell and Drum Towers → Sajinqiao
- Day 2Metro 1 → 9 to Huaqing Pool → Terracotta Army → Lishan Garden → Huaqing Palace → Chang Hen Ge show
- Day 3Shaanxi History Museum → Giant Wild Goose Pagoda → fountain show → Tang Everbright City
Day 1
The wall by bike, and the quarter where the locals eat
Yongningmen (South Gate) → city wall by bike → Shuyuanmen → Bell and Drum Towers → Sajinqiao
A walking day inside the walls, bookended by the two things that are best early and best lit: the wall in the cool of the morning, the towers after dark. The midday break is part of the plan, not a concession.
- 08:00–09:30City wall from YongningmenMetro line 2 to the South Gate and straight up — ¥54 entry, about ¥45 for a bike. Ride the easy section to Hanguangmen (~1.5 km) or Andingmen (~3 km); the full 13.7 km circuit is for the keen, and there is no shade up there.
- 09:30–11:00Shuyuanmen market streetDown from the wall into the calligraphy market. The Forest of Steles is ¥85 and worth it only if calligraphy is your thing.
- 11:00–13:00Lunch in Sajinqiao or DapiyuanRoujiamo, liangpi, paomo you tear yourself, an Ice Peak soda — ¥25–45, where the locals actually eat.
- 13:00–15:00Midday break at the hotelDeliberate, not lazy: in summer this is the difference between a good day and a survivor's story.
- 15:00–16:30Bell and Drum TowersAbout ¥50 for the pair. If a shadow-puppet show is on at Gao's Courtyard (¥30), take it.
- 16:30–19:00The Muslim Quarter, the right streetsWalk Beiyuanmen for the lanterns and the photographs; eat two streets in — Dapiyuan, Xiyangshi, Sajinqiao — where the same bowl costs a third less.
- 19:00–20:30The towers lit, then walk backThe roundabout view after dark is the postcard of the city. Everything today sits inside the walls.
Day 2
Lintong, all of it — the warriors are only half the ticket
Metro 1 → 9 to Huaqing Pool → Terracotta Army → Lishan Garden → Huaqing Palace → Chang Hen Ge show
The one day that leaves the city, and it is a full one by design: the ¥120 ticket covers both the pits and Lishan Garden two kilometres away, and the evening show is staged back at Huaqing. Plan around getting back, not around fitting more in.
- 08:00–09:30Metro out to LintongLine 1 to Fangzhicheng, line 9 to Huaqing Pool, then Lintong bus 602 for about ¥2 — ninety minutes, immune to traffic. Ignore the '306 / You-5' touts at the station.
- 09:30–13:00Terracotta Army, pits 1 → 3 → 2Booked seven days ahead, ¥120, passport scanned at the gate. A guide is worth it — without one it is three sheds of soldiers. Finish in the museum hall.
- 13:00–13:30Lunch at the gateSimple and overpriced, ¥40–60. Walk past the 'Lantian jade' shops — that is not what they say it is.
- 13:30–16:00Lishan Garden and the bronze chariotsFree shuttle from the gate — your ticket already covers this side, and the chariots are the finest objects in the whole complex.
- 16:00–18:30Optional: Huaqing Palace¥120, a stop back down the road. Skip it on a budget day and lose nothing essential.
- 19:40–20:50Optional: Chang Hen Ge showSeventy minutes staged against the mountain (later slots 21:05 and 22:30). Bring a layer — it is outdoors.
- 20:50–22:50Back to Xi'anAfter the show a thousand people leave at once and taxis vanish — pre-book a car or sleep in Lintong.
Day 3
The museum morning, and a Tang-dynasty night
Shaanxi History Museum → Giant Wild Goose Pagoda → fountain show → Tang Everbright City
Everything today rides the metro and nothing needs booking except the one thing that does: the museum. The afternoon is built so the day ends where Xi'an looks best — the Tang district after dark.
- 09:00–12:00Shaanxi History MuseumFree, booked five days ahead at 17:00. Swap your passport for a paper ticket at the entrance ticket centre — you cannot scan straight in. The Hejiacun gold and silver is the room to linger in.
- 12:00–14:00Lunch in XiaozhaiThe student end of town — cheap, fast, one metro stop.
- 14:00–16:00Giant Wild Goose PagodaAbout ¥40 for the Da Ci'en temple grounds, ¥25 more to climb, paid at the tower. The ticket window shuts an hour before the grounds do.
- 16:00–17:30North-square fountain showFree — also at 12:00, 19:00 and 21:00. The evening ones have the lights, the midday ones smaller crowds.
- 17:30–21:00Tang Everbright City after darkFree, open around the clock, street performances most evenings. Useless by day, unmissable at night. Metro back from Dayanta station.
Eat like you mean it
- RoujiamoBraised meat chopped fine, packed into a griddled flatbread — ¥10–15, eaten standing up.
- Yangrou paomoTear the bread yourself into soybean-sized pieces before the kitchen will take it. ¥30–50; the smaller you tear, the better it eats.
- Biangbiang noodlesOne belt-wide noodle under chilli oil and garlic, ¥18–28.
- LiangpiCold wheat-starch noodles with vinegar and chilli — ¥8–15, the thing to eat between two hot meals.
- HulatangPeppery meatball soup, breakfast only — gone by 10:00, so don't plan it for lunch.
- Ice Peak (Bingfeng)The local orange soda, ¥5, and the correct answer to a plate of chilli oil.
Where to stay
- Bell Tower & Drum TowerFirst trip: both towers, the Muslim Quarter and metro lines 1 and 2 under you.
- South Gate (Yongningmen)Quieter, and you walk up onto the wall from the door.
- XiaozhaiThe best value beds, and the Shaanxi History Museum is one stop away.
- Big Wild Goose PagodaNewer hotels in the Tang district — trade the centre for the night shows.
Pitfalls that actually happen
- The fake '306' warriors busHIGHTouts at the train station offer the '306' or 'You-5' shuttle; the ride ends at a mock-up attraction. The real route is metro 1 to Fangzhicheng, line 9 to Huaqing Pool, then bus 602 — ninety minutes, ¥2.
- Eating only on BeiyuanmenMEDThe lantern street through the Drum Tower's arch is for walking and photographs. The same paomo costs 30–50% less two streets in — Dapiyuan, Xiyangshi, Sajinqiao.
- The wrong museum, or no reservationHIGHIt is the Shaanxi History Museum you want, not the Xi'an Museum — and no reservation means no entry. Slots open five days ahead at 17:00 Beijing time and can go in a minute; book with your passport number, then swap it for a paper ticket at the entrance.
- The wall at noon in summerMEDFourteen kilometres of unshaded brick at 38–40 °C. Go at 8:00 or after 17:00 — midday is for the museum.
- Skipping Lishan GardenMEDThe ¥120 warriors ticket already covers it, the bronze chariots are there, and a free shuttle runs every twenty minutes. People who call the warriors underwhelming usually missed this half.
- Huaqing Palace and the show as 'must-sees'LOWBoth are optional. On a budget day skip them and lose nothing essential; on a full day, the Chang Hen Ge show is the better of the two.
- Wrong fountain expectationsLOWThe north-square show runs at 12:00, 16:00, 19:00 and 21:00 — only the evening sessions have the lights. Don't wait at noon expecting them.
- Tang Everbright City by dayLOWIt is an empty stage until dark. Come after 17:30 or not at all.
- 'Lantian jade' at the warriors exitHIGHThe stalls between the gate and the car park are Lintong's classic tourist trap. Buy nothing you cannot verify.
- A wad of airport cashLOWAirport forex rates are poor and you will barely use cash. A little from an ATM in town is plenty.
- Visa-card-onlyHIGHForeign cards are accepted almost nowhere. Set up Alipay or WeChat Pay with your card before you land — the same QR setup rides the metro.
One honest thing — Two bookings decide the trip before you fly: the warriors release tickets seven days ahead with no on-site sales, and the Shaanxi History Museum's free slots open five days ahead at 17:00 Beijing time and can go in a minute. Both scan the passport you booked with.
