Book a bullet train without the headache

The official rail site works with your passport — once you know its quirks. Booking windows, the no-paper-ticket rule, seat classes, and what to do when everything is sold out.

01Before you book

You need exactly two things: a passport with 6+ months validity and a 12306 account registered against that passport number. The English site handles foreign passports natively now — no Chinese phone number required since the 2024 update; email verification works.

Tickets open for sale 15 days before departure, at 8:00–18:00 CST in batches depending on the departure station. For holiday weeks (Golden Week, Spring Festival) treat day 15 like a concert on-sale: be ready at the release minute.

Quick fix

Name fields trip people up: enter your name exactly as the machine-readable line of your passport — surname in "Last name", everything else in "First name", no hyphens.

02Booking on the English site

  1. Create your account on the official English 12306 site and verify by email. Add yourself as a passenger with passport details — this is the step that gets verified against the border database, and it can take a few hours.
  2. Search your route. Use city names, not station names — Beijing has seven stations; the site picks the right ones.
  3. Choose a train by departure time and class (see below). The "candidate" option joins a waitlist if your class is sold out.
  4. Pay with an international Visa/Mastercard or Alipay. You have 30 minutes to complete payment before the hold is released.
  5. That's it. There is no e-ticket to download — your booking is attached to your passport.

03At the station: your passport is the ticket

Chinese ID holders use face gates; foreigners use the staffed lane at the far end of every gate line — look for the passport sign. The agent scans your passport photo page and you're through. Allow 30–40 minutes for big-city stations: there's an airport-style security check at the entrance before you even reach the waiting hall.

Platforms are announced ~15 minutes before departure on the big boards (English toggles every few seconds). Boarding closes 5 minutes before departure, sharp.

04Second class, first class, business, sleeper

Second class is the default and genuinely fine — airline economy with more legroom. First class adds a 2+2 layout and quiet, for roughly 60% more. Business class is a lie-flat seat at airfare prices; nice once, not worth it as a habit.

For overnight distances, soft sleeper (4-berth compartments) on D/Z trains is the traveler favorite: board at 20:00, wake up 1,200 km away. Book sleepers early — they sell out days before seats do.

05When everything is sold out

Don't panic; inventory moves. The candidate waitlist clears more often than you'd expect, refunds spike at the 24-hour mark, and trains release return-leg quotas at intermediate stations. Plan B options in order: waitlist → adjacent departure city → split the journey at a hub → slow train (K/T series, always has space).
